Outside
As a starting place, step back and consider your home from a buyer’s point of view. Cast a critical eye over the approach and initial glimpses of the property – first impressions are most important.

• new doormats at each entrance will reduce the need for cleaning and make clients feel easy about entering your home
• consider the entrance and make sure it is welcoming – add colour either side with tubs of cheery flowering annuals
• thoroughly clean the front door, and polish any fittings
• invest in a new street number for the house

• place vases of cut flowers and bowls of fresh fruit on tables or sideboards
• in areas of low light, turn on lamps

The garden

• prune trees where required, and trim climbers and creeping plants
• grassy areas which have become sodden and muddy may be improved with instant lawn or stepping stones
• dig and weed garden beds – a layer of pine bark or mulch will instantly improve the look and health of the garden and also keep weeds at bay
• mow lawns regularly (not too short!) and trim edges
• sweep paths and driveways, and remove any oil stains
• remove rubbish and use rotting or fallen leaves as mulch

• ensure fences are secure and in good condition
• check that the letterbox is in good repair
• if you have pets, remove droppings regularly
